The Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) has provided more than 69 years of service to America’s Veterans seeking care.

We need Volunteers; we need you!

At VA Central California Health Care System (VACCHCS), Volunteers provide many invaluable services in support of the mission --  “To enhance the Veteran experience, raise Veteran morale and promote physical, mental and spiritual health.”

There are numerous opportunities for Volunteers at VACCHCS:

Customer Service. The aim is to provide Veteran-centric care and exceptional customer service. This program consists of forward greeters, information desk staff, guest service escorts and parking lot shuttle service.

Veteran Transportation Network.  Volunteer drivers provide transportation to ambulatory patients from designated sites, to their Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Merced, Oakhurst and Tulare and to the VA Medical Center in Fresno. This service greatly improves Veteran access to medical care.  A valid driver’s license, DMV driving record and physical are all required.

No Veteran Dies Alone (NVDA). Volunteers provide comfort, companionship and a continuous presence for Veterans who are actively dying without loved ones available.

Veteran Companion. Volunteers provide companionship and safety for hospitalized Veterans recovering from surgery or illness, to minimize the risk of falls/injury.

Event Support.  Volunteers provide logistical and/or administrative event support for observances, ceremonial and holiday outreach events.

Administrative Office Aide. Volunteers assist with administrative duties, i.e. answering phones, taking messages, general filing, aiding with internal/external program activities.

Musician. Volunteers provide therapeutic music to hospitalized Veterans, at VA events and at select areas throughout the facility.
